Painted at Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, Van Gogh copied this composition from a lithograph by Honoré Daumier, translating the black-and-white original into his own intense colour. The spiralling forms of the heavy-set drinkers, the deep shadows, and the blues and greens of the palette are entirely his own.
