Cézanne's still life is one of the key works of Western art. Its tilted table top, multiple simultaneous viewpoints, and the way the objects press forward against the picture plane make it a direct precursor to Cubism. The painting was owned by the poet Stéphane Mallarmé before entering the Art Institute's collection.
